Take the good with the bad
Yesterday we had the day off and everyone decided to do different things. A small group of us went to the beach, Ray and the local guys had organised a bus, picnic, and afternoon out for us. It was so much fun. The beach they took us to is in Levera National Park. The area is stunning, with beach on one side and lakes and mangroves on the other. They had arranged everything for us, so a massive heartfelt thanks go to guys for making us feel so welcome and showing us the vibrant beauty and diversity of the island.
Today we started at 0630 because we had a lot of post holes to record. I was cataloguing ceramics again, but took advantage of the opportunity to snap this pic of the sunrise over the ocean. Looking at the main site now, where the team have mapped out with string which post holes are related to each other, I can honestly say it's looking like a spider's web. There are loads of circular arrangements of post holes, which in some cases over lap. This indicates the reuse of the site over time, where structures are moved, or extended etc. Next job will be to excavate the post holes to try and unravel the story further.
For the past two weeks, I have been driving around in this pick up truck. This means I've been doing all the odd job runs, like taking the boys to collect wood etc. Today, we went to collect bamboo. Although on Friday, Ray gave me a lesson in cutting wood with a machete, I left it to the experts. But it was definitely a new experience for me to drive through town with bamboo strapped to the truck.
However, due to the last couple of days of fun in the sun, by this afternoon, I was really suffering from heat stroke. Corinne sent me home from the site to rest. I was convinced that I was fine and also felt a little guilty. I felt like I was letting the team down by not being there to help with this afternoon's survey. However, within 5 minutes of getting in the front door I was asleep. I certainly feel much better now, and on reflection, I think it was for the best. I would be no use to the team if I passed out in the field. So, even though I wanted to be present and continue working, my body thought otherwise. But, hopefully the worst is over and I'm fresh and ready to face the world again tomorrow.
